In July 2012 the Torch Relay for the London 2012 Olympics, Paralympics and Cultural Olympiad will pass through Dorset.  This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to take part in a very special occasion; the eyes of the world will be on the Torch as it progresses along the route.  Supported by the Director of Children’s Services DepARTure is seeking to commission an artist to work directly with groups of young people and create a resource that other schools can use to create visual art work in response to the Torch Relay.

What we are looking for

We need an artist with exceptional communication skills to plan and deliver 5 workshops in 5 secondary schools in Dorset to create visual arts outcomes that children could use to celebrate the Torch Relay either along the route or in their own schools.  Drawing on the material and outcomes from these workshops the artist will create a set of replicable ideas that primary teachers and the secondary school young people can then teach to younger, primary age children.  Materials used will need to be low-cost in order that other schools can replicate the ideas cost-effectively.

The artist will then produce an online digital resource, explaining how to make the ideas (via a blog, downloadable form, etc) that is accessible to Dorset schools.

Finally the artist will lead two twilight 2-hour sessions for Primary teachers and teaching assistants to demonstrate the ideas and techniques used; skills and understanding that will support primary workshops led by secondary students.

The artist will need to explore ways to make the outcomes meaningful to schools and the young people rather than simply responding to ‘decorate the route’ and use one or more of the Olympic and Paralympic themes of Friendship, Respect, Courage, Determination, Inspiration, Equality.

The successful artist will need to work with DepARTure to ensure any branding is in line with London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic guidelines.
