Teacher Training - Creative approaches to Maths teachingA Sculpture to Climb Inside - Teacher Training, Using the arts to explore other curriculum areas
Lucia Harley delivered an Inset training day for Schools in The Taunton Learning Partnership
Lucia designed a workshop that focused on a sculpture construction challenge using rolled up newspaper triangles in a geodesic style.
As it was large scale participants were able to climb inside. Each group added to the structure and a record of the height and width were kept as the day progressed.
The participants also worked on the surface of the structure with coloured acetates and decorated triangles.
Participants played with tessellation, creating 3d forms and nets. Participants were then encouraged to problem solve, measure and calculate findings.
Lucia also organised a table of resources - including examples of other activities and information sheets for the teachers to take away.
80% participants were ‘very satisfied’ that their teaching had been informed, that their skills and knowledge had increased and that the activity had given them confidence in using more creative ways/visual arts to teach maths.
100% participants said that they would be using what they had learnt back in the classroom in some form or another.
Participants were eager for more ideas on using arts in other curriculum areas
Feedback included:
‘’Very practical and enjoyable”
‘Enjoyed creative activity – always makes me feel chilled and reflective’
‘Very helpful ideas that can easily be used in class’
