Opportunities for residencies and commissions

Ex Lab Symposium 11 and 12 October 2010
This two day residential event located on the coast of Dorset is an introduction to the
Exploratory Laboratory project. The symposium accompanies the Ex Lab exhibition
currently running at Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset. It is intended as an introduction and
research opportunity for artists interested in working with coastal contexts and
considering applying for the Ex Lab residencies and commissions. The programme will
include gallery talks from the exhibiting artists plus presentations and demonstrations
from earth scientists on the geology and geomorphology of the Jurassic Coast and the
techniques and technologies currently being used to monitor coastal change, including
LIDAR, Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), Differential Global Positioning System (dGPS),
Gigapan photography and seabed mapping using high resolution multibeam sonar
survey techniques.
The symposium will be based in Bridport - a vibrant and colourful market town set
amongst the West Dorset hills and close to the western end of Chesil Beach.

EXPLORATORY LABORATORY EXHIBITION runs until 23 October at Bridport Arts Centre

The show highlights some of the new techniques and technologies being used
by earth scientists to map and monitor the coast and brings together artists
from around the country working with observation, earth sciences or data
visualisation and adopting new techniques and technologies to create new work.
The exhibition includes work by Mat Chivers, Michael Eden, Ilana Halperin,
Alex Hartley, Charlie Hooker, Aaron Koblin, Sarah O’Hana, Katy Woods
and Neal White with the Office of Experiments.

Ex Lab is presented by Big Picture and funded by Arts Council England SW,
Jurassic Coast Arts, West Dorset District Council, Dorset County Council and Fine Foundation.
Big Picture is a collaboration of seven visual arts organisations and professionals in Dorset
working with Dorset County Council to develop vibrant visual arts in the county. Its members
are Artsreach, Bridport Arts Centre, Dorset Visual Arts, PVA MediaLab, Sherborne House Arts,
Sherborne School and Walford Mill Crafts.
